The self-serving bias

This is the tendency to attribute our own successes to our personal characteristics or efforts, and to attribute our failures to external or situational factors. For example, if a candidate we hired turns out to be successful, we may be more likely to attribute it to our own wisdom or skill as evaluators, while if they fail, we may be more likely to blame it on their lack of qualifications or fit. The self-serving bias can cause us to make biased or self-serving hiring decisions, and it can lead us to overlook the value of collaboration, feedback, or accountability in the hiring process.
